V-port ball valve application

Overview – What is a V-Port Ball Valve?

A V-port ball valve (also called a V-notch ball valve) has a ball with a V-shaped cut on the port.
It can both shut off and regulate flow precisely.

✅ Main Features

  • Flow characteristic: approximately equal-percentage (ideal for throttling control).

  • Tight sealing: available in soft or metal seats (Class V–VI leakage).

  • Shearing ability: the sharp V-edge can cut through fibers, slurry, or viscous media.

  • High capacity: large Cv and low pressure drop.

  • Typical media: gas, steam, water, slurry, oil, pulp, and other mixed fluids.


⚙️ 2. Key Selection Parameters

(1) Valve Size (DN / NPS)

Select based on process flow.
Use the flow coefficient (Cv) to size the valve:

Q=Cv×ΔPSGQ = C_v \times \sqrt{\frac{\Delta P}{SG}}

Where:

  • QQ = flow rate (m³/h)

  • CvC_v = valve flow coefficient

  • ΔP\Delta P = pressure drop (bar)

  • SGSG = specific gravity of fluid

Note: Because V-port ball valves have a high Cv, you can often choose a size one step smaller than the pipeline diameter.


(2) Pressure Rating

Match the system pressure:

  • Common standards: PN16, PN40, PN64, or ANSI 150/300/600.

  • The valve’s design pressure should be ≥ 1.1 – 1.5 × maximum working pressure.

Most V-port valves provide:

  • Equal-percentage characteristic → best for general control.

  • Linear characteristic → for precise proportional control.
