Pipeline Fittings & Valve Selection Guide

Pipeline Fittings & Valve Selection Guide

1. Understand Operating Conditions (Key Factors)

Before selecting any valve or pipe fitting, consider the following parameters:

  1. Type of Medium (e.g. water, steam, oil, gas, corrosive fluids)

  2. Temperature Range

  3. Pressure Rating

  4. Flow Rate Requirements

  5. Installation Space & Orientation

  6. Manual vs. Automated Operation

2. Common Valve Types & Their Applications

Valve TypeFeatures / Applications
Gate ValveFully open/closed, used for isolation. Low pressure drop. Not suitable for throttling.
Globe ValveGood for flow regulation. Higher pressure loss. Ideal for smaller pipelines.
Ball ValveQuick shut-off, excellent sealing. Suitable for gases and liquids. Not for throttling.
Butterfly ValveCompact design, ideal for large-diameter and low-pressure systems. Common in water and HVAC.
Check ValvePrevents backflow. Used after pumps, in vertical lines. Includes swing, lift, and wafer types.
Safety ValveReleases excess pressure automatically. Used in boilers, pressure vessels.
Solenoid ValveElectrically operated. Used in automated control systems (e.g., water treatment, pneumatics).

3. Common Pipe Fittings & Their Functions

Fitting TypePurpose
FlangesDetachable connection. Useful for maintenance and valve replacement.
ElbowsChange the direction of flow (typically 45° or 90°).
Tees/CrossesBranch or combine fluid flow.
ReducersConnect pipes of different diameters.
Couplings/UnionsJoin or quickly disconnect pipes.
Expansion JointsAbsorb thermal expansion or vibration. Common in steam or hot water systems.
Strainers/FiltersRemove debris from the flow. Protect valves and equipment.

4. Material Selection (Depends on Medium & Temperature)

MaterialSuitable MediumTemp RangeFeatures
Cast IronWater, Air-10°C~200°CLow cost, used in low-pressure systems.
Carbon SteelOil, Steam, Water-29°C~425°CStrong and durable, suitable for medium-high pressure.
Stainless SteelCorrosive fluids-196°C~600°CHigh corrosion and temperature resistance.
Brass/CopperWater, Gas-40°C~200°CGood thermal conductivity, common in residential plumbing.
PVC/UPVCCold Water, Mild Chemicals0°C~60°CLightweight, economical, for low-pressure cold water.

5. Installation & Maintenance Tips

  1. Leave access space for maintenance and disassembly, especially with flanged connections.

  2. Check flow direction during installation (e.g., check valves, strainers, globe valves).

  3. Use ball valves or electric valves for frequent on/off operation.

  4. Account for thermal expansion in high-temperature systems.

  5. Inspect regularly for leaks, wear, and sealing performance.
